Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty: Recently President Bush announced that the United States would withdraw from the 1972 Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty. The ABM treaty is widely regarded as a foundation for non-proliferation and disarmament.

Arms Transfer, Small Arms and Conventional Weapons: There are more than 500 million weapons circulating in the world. Many on these are sold by the U.S. to hot spots around the world. There are currently no laws that provide security that these weapons will not be used against innocent civilians or for that matter against U.N Peacekeepers or U.S. military. A U.S. Code of Conduct must be established to regulate to whom these weapons will be sold.

Biological Weapons: PeaceWorks opposes the production and use of biological weapons. Not only are they weapons of mass destruction, but they are also the weapons of terrorists.

Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty: The CTBT has the support of most U.S. allies worldwide. The nuclear test ban treaty’s rejection by the U.S. has serious consequences for international efforts to constrain the spread of nuclear weapons. The distrust this creates will lead to more nations attempting to harness the destructive power of nuclear weapons.

De-Alerting: The de-alerting of nuclear weapons is one of the most pressing threats that needs to be addressed. U.S. and Russian nuclear weapons remain on hair-trigger alert. The two nations should agree immediately to de-alert those nuclear weapons as the threat of the cold war is over.

Foreign Policy: PeaceWorks, like peace action calls for a New Foreign Policy.  Arms trade with governments that are human rights abusers, and the creation of more nuclear weapons are seen as fatal mistakes in the creation of world peace.  Furthermore, we should play a positive leadership role in the world community , planning stratagies for a future we can all live with.

International Criminal Court: The International Criminal Court is being formed right now. The U.S. must be pressured to ratify the I.C.C. if the court is to be effective in bringing the perpetrators of international terror and genocide to justice without killing more innocent civilians.

Iraq: PeaceWorks is opposed to war with Iraq. We support human rights and democracy for all. We believe we should strengthen and use the United Nations, and the International Criminal Court, and the redirectiion of money to meet human needs, instead of Weapons of Mass Destruction and the threat of war to create a stable political climate.

Landmines: We urge the United States to join the International Landmine Treaty. Landmines are hidden terrorist devices that kill and maim thousands of innocent civilians every year even after the conflict is over.

Military Spending: The reduction of the U.S. military budget remains a constant target of our efforts. We support the use of diplomacy before the escalation of war. Increases in military spending mean that human needs are not being met. The cycle of violence this creates ensures that the world will become increasingly unstable and dangerous.

Middle East/Iraq Sanctions: We support justice for Israelis and Palestinians in the Middle East and an end to all military aid to the region. We support an international peacekeeping force and the Mitchell Report, particularly the removal of Israeli settlements from areas under negotiation as part of a Palestinian state.

National Missile Defense: our allies and opponents alike, for good reason, oppose NMD. We oppose this unworkable weapon system, which would provide us no more safety and would restart the nuclear arms race. Further, this hugely expensive program is taking tax funds that could otherwise enhance the lives of our citizens via human services.

Nuclear Weapons/ Disarmament: PeaceWorks is opposed to the use of nuclear weapons in any form. Nuclear weapons not only kill the innocent and destroy and pollute environments for centuries, but also cost the taxpayers countless dollars in production, and deployment.
