Son of Star Wars Lives

The US wants to base at least 10 missiles in Europe for the “son of StarWars” missile defense system within the next five years.  The Pentagon has also already decided to prepare for a major new missile interceptor base in Europe and is starting detailed studies to find thebest site - including possible bases in the UK, Poland, the Czech Republic, or Hungary.  The US would start buying missiles for the new site as early as October next year.  The base is a key part of President Bush’s $10 billion-a-year plan to construct a “missile shield” to protect the US and its European allies from weapons fired by rogue states in Asia and the Middle East, such as North Korea and Iran.

    If you oppose this proposed action, please contact the Defense Department in The Pentagon, Washington DC 20301 (703-697-5736) and President Bush (202-456-1111).

President Bush & Congress should hear from us:

The president is expected to submit a supplemental appropriations request on Monday, February 7,  when the regular budget is submitted to Congress.  The supplemental request would cover the unbudgeted costs of the Iraq and Afghan wars.  Estimates range from $75 billion to  over $100 billion.

If you are troubled by this plan,

Contact President Bush at 202-456-1111; and
in Missouri - Senator Bond at 816-471-7141,
Senator Talent at 816-421-1639,
and Congressman Cleaver at 816-842-4545 (temporarily);
in Kansas - Senator Roberts at 913-451-9343,
Senator Brownback at 913-492-6378, and
Congressman Moore at 913-383-2013.

Nuclear missiles still on hair-trigger alert

    Former Senator Sam Nunn is leading a campaign to persuade American and Russian leaders to take their thousands of strategic nuclear warheads off hair-trigger alert.  The chances of an accidental, mistaken or unauthorized nuclear attack may actually be increasing.
    In President Bush's 2000 election campaign, he called the hair-trigger status "another unncessary vestige of Cold War confrontation" that creates "unacceptable risks."
    No treaties in force at this time address the hair-trigger concern.  Bush's refusal to consider the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty and his request for $500 million for research on bunker-busters and mini-nukes indicates that no movement will take place without constituent pressure.

    Tell President Bush to work to take the nuclear warheads off hair-trigger alert NOW, as he promised in the 2000 Republican Platform.  Contact him at The White House, 1600 Pennsylvania Ave, Washington DC 20500, or call 202-456-1111.
